I graduated from college with a degree in English Literature and then spent ten years working cash registers, pasting up advertisements for newspapers, and even, for a short spell, making miniature carousels. Somewhere around 1985, I did what any logical english major would do: I decided to become an egg tempera painter. There were no instructors around so I bought books. My first painting took 3 months to complete and I ended up throwing it like a frisbee across the road and into a duck pond. Short on cash, I found employment as an art director for a magazine but I continued to peck away at egg tempera in my spare time. Thirty years later, I am painting full-time. My eyes are shot from all the fine detail work this medium requires, but I have never regretted my decision to become an egg tempera painter. I only wish I had that duck pond painting back.
